In order to be truly successful in Arenas, you need a number of things, the right team, good and flexible strategies based on the team you encounter, a spec that you are practiced and comfortable with, and a good set of gear. The part that I will focus on in this forum topic is the gear.
The best arena gear (currently season 3) can only be obtained by spending arena points, which are based on how successful you are in arena from week to week. Currently, you can spend honor gained from battlegrounds and world PvP to obtain the season 1 arena set and the season 3 pieces that are not in the set. However, this honor takes a long time to build up and you are 70 now and want to try out your character in Arena.
The next step down from the season 1 set can ge obtained based on your reputation with 5 outland factions. These factions are Thrallmar, Cenerian Expedition, Lower City, Keepers of Time, and Sha'tar. If you have a reputation of honored, the set pieces can be purchased with gold. The set is hands/head/legs/chest/shoulders. The 2-piece set bonus is +35 resilience and the 4-piece set bonus is class specific.
To get started out, I would suggest getting the Faction set pieces you can, use your honor points to buy the PVP trinket Medallion of the Horde with the 2 min cooldown, then the current arena season bracers, boots, and belt. Left out of this is the rings, weapon(s), other trinket, and offhand. We can touch on those by looking at what is available for the specific class. At this point in time, I am trying to paint a general picture. Feel free to add expertise or ask questions.
